St Jude – Final week of Proton Radiation?

Posted on September 5, 2022

Dad did an outstanding job keeping the blog rolling last week while he and Mom watched over Summer in Memphis.  I mentioned it before, and I will repeat it… Sometimes you see things enough that you get a dulled sensation.  Those little things Dad noticed in the waiting rooms with other parents and kids get lost as you go through the motions of your own family members.  Whether it’s the battlefield or the cancer ward…  You get so wrapped up in your fight every day that you forget other people are looking at it with new eyes.

Summer spent the holiday weekend in Carbondale with her roommates and her cat.  I called her at one point and asked her what she was doing, she said “I have been trapped under my cat for 3 hours and haven’t been able to get up”.  Well, likely, she needed that 3-hour nap…  But it was probably easier to accomplish with her cuddly little buddy with her.

We dropped Aiden off in Wisconsin for school on Saturday and had a few days of true empty nest time as a couple to realize that it’s pretty quiet around here.  It’s going to get even quieter now that Angela has headed back to Memphis for the next few days.

Summers proton treatment was initially scheduled to be over this Wednesday… But that was before they remembered she would be off on Monday for Labor Day.  Now the finish date is Thursday at the minimum.  And… Angela said she was not leaving that same day and driving home till 11 pm at night as I would do.  If she is released Thursday… We might see Angela home for the weekend and Summer back to Carbondale for a week or so until we get her back home to visit with everyone.

BUT… Big BUT…  There is a plastic surgery appointment and some other appointments lingering around on the horizon… and its possible that this could drag on into next week.  It’s too early to tell right now…  But we will see if this keeps the ladies of this family stuck down in Memphis for another few days.

At this point… Summer will get 5 weeks off and head back to Memphis for more Chemotherapy in mid-October.  We still hold out hopes for some Peoria Affiliate services… But they might be around the holidays.  Dr. Gajjar said this might (low committal “might”) be an option, but as everyone has said…  Keep Summer where she has the best treatment.  We will be working on the Jenga game of best decisions for the months to come.

With Ang in Memphis.. I will TRY to post some updates but they will be brief.  The plastic surgeon is the big news item we are waiting on.  Obviously, Proton treatment ending this week is huge as well so I don’t want to marginalize this.  Summer has done very well through this section of the treatment.  She has lost very little weight and she still has good energy.  Lots of love and support from everyone must be helping out.  She is also very stubborn and I think her headstrong ways also lend to her results.

Again… No more mail to Target House until we head back later this year.

Thanks for the love!  I sat with so many friends and customers this last week who are supportive and care about my kid that it’s overwhelming.  My emotional state between Summer and Aiden leaving has me on the ropes for some moments.  Yeah, Dad’s get weepy too.
