I always wait till the last minute to do the “Spring tuneup” on my Cub Cadet mower…. Every year! I do it about 2 weeks after I should have mowed for the first time of the year. (Kinda ironic since I work in service huh?)
This year… I had a couple advantages working for me. 1) Ang’s new horse trailer will fit either of my tractors… So, getting someone to pick it up is no longer mandatory. 2) I have the Kubota tractor with the finish mower if I get truly desperate. 3) We always have a push mower if it comes down to it.
Well, I took the Cub Cadet to A-Z Rental in Pekin last Friday… They said it would be about a week before it was done. That was before I gave them the grocery list of things that were wrong with it besides needing the Spring Check Up. Flat tire, blown belts, bad tensioners… ect.
Without my regular riding mower: I stated very boldly to Ang that I would just “push mow” the yard in the meantime.
Well, that thought blew out of my ears when I started doing some ditch mowing on the Kubota tractor’s rear deck mower. I had the mower redone and fixed by my neighbor this winter in hopes that it would not leak gear lube all over the garage like it did last summer.
Well, I had low expectations… This thing can mow like a pro!
I started mowing the edges of the yard… And soon enough found myself doing everything! It looked good! Not great… But very passable!
In the end… I had to edge and weedeat more than I normally would, since the deck mower cannot get nearly as close to objects as the Cub. Wait… It can… Its just that it will pull things out of the ground and ruin anything that gets in its path. (Not worth the marital strife if I destroy the trellis!)
