Its been a few “minutes” since my last post… I had a kid say it’ll be a “hot minute” before a job was done in the shop the other day. I had to ask for just a bit more clarity. Lets just say its been a few days.
I am making a post today to place a permanent marker on an amazing blunder… That keeps on giving.
The picture on the left is the warped and damaged targa top on our kinda-new-to-us 1990 Supra. We got the car out this spring and have been tinkering with the cooling system. It was blowing coolant past the overflow tank. The coolant looked REALLY bad, so we drained it and installed a new Thermostat.
So far this spring, its been a matter of small trips to check out the operation of everything.
Then Summer came home.
She asked if she could drive it via a text one day. She had only been home a day or two, but it seemed fine to me. I said “sure”.
2 hours later I get a phone call… But I was in a meeting and did not answer it. Seconds later I saw she was calling again. With kids, thats usually a sign that you need to take the call. I hit accept and promptly heard a heavy breathing daughter who was ranting or crying that she wrecked the Supra. I waited a minute while she regrouped and got the whole story.
She had pulled onto Allentown Rd (right in front of our house) and while up to 55MPH the removable roof suddenly left the car.
We have had a gentleman’s agreement at the house this spring… The car generally stays parked unless the weather warrants a drive. If its driven… the targa is taken off. That means we have left the roof “loose” while its not being driven. For the three of us at home, its obvious that the roof is either tight or loose by looking at it.
Summer has not been in this conversation or thought process with us. Our casual system failed!
The good news:
- The truck behind her didn’t run over the roof or drive off the road avoiding the giant chuck of metal debris.
- The Supra escaped dents, dings or broken windows.
The bad news:
- I have a seriously bent targa top.
- I have a Supra that is a garage queen unless the weather is nice. Which has not happened much lately.
I think Im gonna try and on it and see if we can get it to tighten down. Wish me luck!
BTW… I need to use this page more for the daily entries… I know and YOU should know that posting on the Social Networks is a morass of confusion and algorithms. You can NEVER find anything you post after a week or two. Use personal spaces!!!
