Linda has had a tough couple of months. She started with a surgery after her initial fall that just replaced the ball of her hip. Since then, she has had three more hip dislocations while in recovery at a local “skilled care facility”. I use quotation marks with a purpose. Consider it sarcasm. Angela and I have become quick studies of the post-surgery rehabilitation since Linda’s fall and have worked very hard to fix some initial mistakes.
The surgeons have also been frustrated with the level of care she was getting with our choice of rehab. Lack of communication with her needs and complete neglect of her nutrition nearly had her miss her second surgery. While I would love to point fingers at the facility, the emergency room doctors at her surgery facility have had no communication with her primary surgeon whenever she has had a dislocation… So, that has resulted in at least two extra ambulance rides and days of confusion.
All that said, breathlessly, I have a good update!
Linda had a second surgery last week, and this time they replaced the whole hip. The same surgeon had determined that the previous surgery would never heal in a way that she could move around without fear of popping back out of place. Everything went well, and with a renewed effort on rehabilitation, we were able to get her in the Bounce Back program at Pekin Manor.
We are thrilled at the attention she is getting at Pekin Manor. I have not heard “I don’t know, I’m agency” when asking a question of a staff member. I also have not heard swearing by the staff or caught sight of a piece of bologna advertised as a chicken breast on the daily menu.
If all goes to plan, Linda should be up and out of the facility in about a month or so.
Linda asked that I alert everyone, so it now occurs to me that I might have overstepped a TMI boundary. But, it’s been a long slog since April, and I figured some of this information needs to be shared! If you would like to visit her or send mail, I can pass along the address and room number.
Thank you to everyone who has been stopping by to see her. It means a lot when you are trapped in a room for weeks on end!
So why didn’t the surgeon replace her hip the first time around?! SMH
There’s no valid excuse for lack of communication! I’m so sorry she’s had to go through all this.
Saying prayers that’s she’s in on the right road to getting the heck outta there!
No one in the medical/rehab/nursing home/hospice fields seem to know what communication is. And if there is no one to advocate, it is horrible. Our health system is so broken that I could write a book of personal experiences, but no one would believe it. Glad she is doing well and can look forward to getting out
Sure miss her at Delavan Baptist Church. I keep praying for a full recovery. May God continue to shine thru Linda ✝️
